Since the Institute's foundation, in 1973, one of its main priorities has been the creation of a library containing books that specialize in the field of maritime archaeology and history. The collection includes titles from the international bibliography, in both Greek and other languages. The library was considerably enriched in 2002, following the death of the Institute's founder, the late Nikolaos Tsouchlos, who donated his valuable collection to the Institute. To this day, HIMA possesses a collection of approximately 1,500 entries, including some very old and rare editions, books and journals, reprints and articles, PhD theses and proceedings of conferences. The Tsouchlos bequest also included photographs of all activities and archaeological expeditions of the Institute since 1973.
Scholars and students of maritime archaeology as well as non-specialists with an interest in the field of maritime archaeology have the opportunity to visit and use the only specialized library in Greece , and one of the few that exist in Europe .
