Over the 36 years of its life, the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology has succeeded in gaining the support of highly distinguished and generous sponsors. This has been possible thanks to the seriousness of the archaeological work it has carried out, its organizational efficiency, the large participation of volunteers, and its effectiveness in communicating its work to the general public.
It is also worth noting that the activity of HIMA has always been founded on voluntary work as well as money drawn from its own sources. These sources are entirely dependent on the generosity of our sponsors, as well as occasional state funding.
Our sponsorships derive from three main sources:
Private corporations operating in a variety of sectors.
Public sector institutions and organizations such as the Ministry of Culture, Local Government, the Greek Navy, and others.
And, significantly, sponsorships and donations from individuals.
The form of the sponsorship varies, but generally falls into one of the following three categories:
Contributions to the HIMA cashbox.
Provision of services or materials and equipment that aid our work, such as sea craft, photographic materials, diving equipment, and so on.
Indirect funding for basic material and research needs of the Institute, such as accommodation, food, transport, travel, fuel, and so on. This form of sponsorship is not recorded in the accounts of HIMA as it is handled by the sponsors themselves.
A rough estimate of the money spent by HIMA to pay for its work (corresponding to sponsorship) over the past 30 years at current prices is in the region of 2.5 million Euros, while indirect sponsorship exceeds this amount. In total, therefore, HIMA has absorbed some 5 million Euros during its 30-year existence.
HIMAs expenses generally cover travel and accommodation expenses of its research teams, energy and equipment, conservation of finds, organization of exhibitions and scientific events, and the Institutes publishing activity.
